Not the general medicine subspeciality you need? Diabetology is one section of our full general medicine collection — the hub page lists every subspeciality, each with its own free topic list. Updated September 2026.
📌 Updated for 2026–2027 MD/DNB Medicine Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus admissions
The page has been reviewed for practical feasibility, current complication screening, realistic follow-up windows and measurements commonly available in medical colleges and teaching hospitals.
Most topics can be completed with glycated haemoglobin, fasting and postprandial glucose, lipid profile, renal and liver function tests, urine albumin assessment, anthropometry, blood pressure, bedside neuropathy screening and routine ophthalmic evaluation.
Research-only continuous glucose monitoring, advanced metabolic biomarkers, genetic testing and expensive imaging are not required for the majority of projects.

Alongside diabetology protocols and synopses, support is also available for departmental presentations, journal club presentations, ethics committee presentations, and posters and oral presentations for medical conferences — for postgraduate residents, board trainees and research scholars across India and the GCC. Prepared by a practising doctor with long experience in medical publishing and thesis supervision.
The topics above work as research questions anywhere — what changes is the document the institution expects, and who approves it before data collection begins. The Gulf equivalent of an Indian synopsis is the diabetology research proposal submitted to an institutional review board, and it ordinarily carries three sections an Indian synopsis does not: a Gantt chart, a budget and resources section, and a Declaration of Helsinki statement.
Board and residency programmes — country by country
Saudi Arabia — SCFHS and the Saudi Board. Residency and fellowship training under the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties includes a research project with a set timeline, and the diabetology research proposal is the document prepared at the outset and cleared by the institutional review board before recruitment starts.
United Arab Emirates — DHA, DOH Abu Dhabi and MOHAP. Residents training in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates prepare a diabetology research protocol for their programme and submit it for institutional review board approval before any data are collected.
Qatar — DHP (formerly QCHP) and Hamad Medical Corporation. A diabetology IRB proposal is reviewed before recruitment, with the ethics section written to the institution's own template rather than a generic one.
Bahrain — NHRA. Trainees turning diabetology research topics into a project need the proposal cleared by their institutional research and ethics committee before fieldwork begins.
Oman — OMSB. Residency programmes under the Oman Medical Specialty Board include a research component, and the diabetology research proposal is the document assessed at the start of it.
Kuwait — KIMS. A diabetology study protocol goes to the institutional committee for approval before the project begins.
Arab Board programmes across the region. The Arab Board carries its own research requirement irrespective of the host country, and the diabetology proposal follows the same structure throughout.
Postgraduate degrees — Malaysia, the Gulf and beyond
Malaysia — MMed, the National Medical Research Register and MREC. A diabetology dissertation proposal for a Master of Medicine programme carried out in a Ministry of Health facility must be registered on the NMRR and approved by the Medical Research and Ethics Committee before the study begins, and the guidance asks for submission four to six months ahead of data collection. Every investigator on the study team registers on the NMRR as well, so the methodology, ethics and team sections are written in far more detail than an Indian synopsis requires.
PhD and Master's candidates elsewhere. University programmes generally require a full diabetology research proposal of roughly 6,000 to 10,000 words, with an extended literature review, a theoretical framework and a detailed methodology chapter.
PhD and MMed proposals are written individually by a medical doctor and revised until the supervisor accepts them. They are not produced by the automated protocol generator.
🔥 Trending research areas in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus for 2026–27
Complication clustering: combining kidney, retinal and neuropathic findings can produce clinically useful risk profiles when each complication has a clear and separate case definition.
Patient-centred diabetes outcomes: treatment burden, sleep quality, distress, adherence, self-care and quality of life are increasingly relevant because laboratory control alone does not capture the patient's functional experience.
Simple metabolic risk markers: waist measures, triglyceride-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, complete-blood-count-derived indices and serum uric acid remain attractive for low-cost observational work when overinterpretation is avoided.
Medication-related complications: metformin-associated vitamin B12 deficiency, insulin injection-site lipohypertrophy and polypharmacy-related adherence problems are practical areas with direct relevance to routine diabetes care.
Protocol and synopsis guidance
What a Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus protocol must contain
Define glycaemic control before recruitment. The protocol should state whether glycaemic status is based on glycated haemoglobin, fasting plasma glucose, postprandial glucose or a combination, and it should prespecify the therapeutic target or analytical cut-off used for the primary objective.
State when glycated haemoglobin may be unreliable. Anaemia, altered red-cell turnover, recent transfusion, chronic kidney disease, haemoglobin variants and some haematological conditions can distort glycated haemoglobin. The protocol should define relevant exclusions, subgroup analyses or alternative glucose measures rather than treating every glycated haemoglobin value as equally interpretable.
Separate screening from diagnosis. Monofilament loss, a neuropathy questionnaire, high obstructive-sleep-apnoea risk, depression screening, albuminuria on one sample and a single abnormal thyroid test should be described as screening or preliminary classification unless the chosen definition genuinely establishes the diagnosis.
Fix the exposure window. Diet, physical activity, medication adherence, tobacco exposure, insulin technique and self-care are time-dependent behaviours. The protocol should define whether the questionnaire refers to the preceding week, month or longer period and should use the same recall window for all participants.
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus synopsis versus Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus protocol
The synopsis is the concise academic registration document. It usually contains the title, rationale, objectives, design, setting, eligibility criteria, principal variables, sample size, analysis plan and ethical safeguards required by the institution or university.
The protocol is the operational document. It should additionally define glycaemic targets, laboratory methods, the timing of fasting and postprandial sampling, complication definitions, urine albumin methodology, neuropathy-screening technique, questionnaire versions, drug-exposure definitions, follow-up windows and missing-data rules.
Diabetes research is vulnerable to classification drift. A participant may simultaneously have poor glycaemic control, anaemia, kidney disease, obesity, hypertension and multiple treatments. The protocol should therefore state which variable is the primary exposure, which is the primary outcome and which variables are potential confounders rather than treating every abnormality as an independent association.
Sample size and statistical analysis
Base the sample size on the primary objective. Prevalence studies need an expected proportion and precision; correlation studies need an anticipated correlation coefficient; comparative studies need an expected difference between groups; and prospective studies need an expected event rate or mean change.
Avoid creating many overlapping outcomes from one dataset. Glycated haemoglobin can be analysed as a continuous value or categorised according to a prespecified target, but repeatedly testing the same outcome against dozens of laboratory and behavioural variables increases false-positive findings. The protocol should identify one primary analysis and a limited number of secondary analyses.
Match the test to the variable. Continuous measures such as glycated haemoglobin, body mass index and lipid values may require correlation, group comparison or regression; categorical outcomes such as albuminuria, neuropathy or retinopathy may require chi-square, Fisher exact or logistic regression; paired follow-up measurements require paired analysis.
Plan clinically important confounders. Age, diabetes duration, treatment regimen, obesity, hypertension, renal function, smoking or smokeless tobacco use and medication adherence commonly influence both the exposure and the complication being studied. Prespecifying these variables is preferable to adjusting for every available laboratory parameter.
1. How do I choose a feasible type 2 diabetes mellitus thesis topic?
For the 2026–2027 academic year, a feasible topic should use a common diabetes clinic population, one routinely available exposure or investigation, one clearly defined primary outcome and a sample that can realistically be recruited within the residency period. Before finalising the title, confirm access to glycated haemoglobin, urine albumin assessment, neuropathy screening, retinal examination or other measurements required by the primary objective.
2. Which study designs are commonly accepted for a type 2 diabetes mellitus thesis?
Cross-sectional, comparative cross-sectional, case-control, prospective observational, retrospective record-based, diagnostic accuracy, correlation and clinical-audit designs are all suitable when matched to the objective. A study should not be called cross-sectional if the primary outcome depends on change in glycated haemoglobin, treatment response, complication development or follow-up adherence.
3. What should I settle with my guide before registering the topic?
Settle the glycaemic-control definition, primary exposure, primary outcome, complication criteria, laboratory methods, questionnaire or bedside tool, recall period, important confounders and main statistical comparison. If the topic depends on fundus grading, urine albumin testing, vitamin assays or structured neuropathy assessment, confirm routine availability before registration.
4. Can one hospital visit provide enough data for a diabetes thesis?
Yes, for many cross-sectional objectives, provided the variables represent the same meaningful time window. A single visit is suitable for anthropometry, current treatment, biochemical measurements and validated screening tools, but it is weaker for behaviours requiring long recall and cannot establish chronicity where repeat measurements are part of the disease definition. The protocol should distinguish a one-time association from a longitudinal change.
5. What is the difference between a type 2 diabetes mellitus synopsis and a protocol?
The synopsis is the shorter academic registration document, while the protocol contains the detailed operating rules required to conduct the study reproducibly. In diabetes research, these rules should include glycaemic targets, blood-sampling conditions, complication definitions, urine albumin methods, screening-tool versions, treatment classification, recall periods and follow-up procedures.
6. What ethical issues should a type 2 diabetes mellitus thesis address?
Prospective studies require informed consent. Record-based studies may seek an ethics-approved waiver of consent when risk is minimal and confidentiality is protected. Research should not add venepuncture, imaging, retinal procedures or other investigations purely to create data unless scientifically justified and approved; when additional blood sampling is necessary, the protocol should state the proposed blood volume and frequency. Separate consent is required for identifiable foot, skin or injection-site photographs. Newly detected severe hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia, advanced foot risk, marked albuminuria, visual-threatening retinopathy or other clinically important findings should have a named escalation route to the treating team.
7. When can glycated haemoglobin misclassify glycaemic control in a diabetes thesis?
Glycated haemoglobin reflects glucose exposure indirectly through red-cell lifespan, so conditions that shorten or prolong red-cell survival can alter the value independently of glucose. Anaemia, recent transfusion, haemolysis, advanced kidney disease and some haemoglobin variants are important examples. The protocol should prespecify how such participants will be handled and should consider fasting, postprandial or other routinely available glucose measurements when glycated haemoglobin is biologically difficult to interpret. A statistically strong association is not reliable if the principal glycaemic measure is systematically distorted in one comparison group.
8. Can these topics be adapted for PhD or Gulf board research requirements?
Yes, but the scope and document type should be redesigned rather than simply expanding an MD synopsis. A PhD proposal generally needs a broader conceptual framework, stronger originality and more extensive methodology. Gulf training pathways may require a board research project rather than an Indian-style dissertation; this includes programmes linked to SCFHS and the Saudi Board, the Arab Board of Health Specializations, and DHP, DHA, DOH and MOHAP-linked training programmes. The same clinical question can often be adapted, but approval pathways, sample size, supervision and reporting requirements should be checked against the relevant programme.
9. When should I register my type 2 diabetes mellitus thesis topic?
Registration should occur after confirming patient volume, the glycaemic-control measure, complication definition, required investigations, questionnaire availability and analysis plan, while leaving sufficient time for ethics approval and recruitment. Topics requiring repeat albumin testing, prospective glycated haemoglobin change or longer complication follow-up need an especially careful timeline before formal submission.
