This collection of pulmonology thesis topics for MD Medicine supports MD and DNB General Medicine residents studying asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory infections, tuberculosis, pleural disease, interstitial lung disease, sleep-related breathing problems and respiratory failure. These pulmonology research topics for medicine residents can be shaped into projects completable within one thesis period using patients and investigations already available in medicine wards, outpatient clinics and collaborating respiratory units, after confirming recruitment and test access. Clinical assessment, chest radiography, quality-assured spirometry and routine laboratory investigations support many feasible questions. Each selected question should be developed into a pulmonology protocol for MD Medicine and an institution-specific pulmonology synopsis for medicine residents.

Not the general medicine subspeciality you need? Pulmonology is one section of our full general medicine collection — the hub page lists every subspeciality, each with its own free topic list. Updated September 2026.
📌 Updated for 2026–2027 MD and DNB Medicine admissions: Pulmonology
The accompanying guidance has been reviewed for spirometry quality, disease stability, oxygen-support documentation and the distinction between screening findings and confirmed respiratory diagnoses.
Many projects can use clinical scores, chest radiographs, spirometry, sputum testing and routine biochemistry; confirm trained operators, equipment quality checks and access to the relevant clinical records.
Bronchoscopy, plethysmography, diffusion testing, high-resolution CT and polysomnography are not prerequisites for every study; questions that require them need confirmed facilities and clinically appropriate access.
Publication potential is stronger when a common respiratory problem is studied with consistent measurement conditions, a suitable reference assessment and outcomes meaningful to patient care.

Alongside pulmonology protocols and synopses, support is also available for departmental presentations, journal club presentations, ethics committee presentations, and posters and oral presentations for medical conferences — for postgraduate residents, board trainees and research scholars across India and the GCC. Prepared by a practising doctor with long experience in medical publishing and thesis supervision.
The topics above work as research questions anywhere — what changes is the document the institution expects, and who approves it before data collection begins. The Gulf equivalent of an Indian synopsis is the pulmonology research proposal submitted to an institutional review board, and it ordinarily carries three sections an Indian synopsis does not: a Gantt chart, a budget and resources section, and a Declaration of Helsinki statement.
Board and residency programmes — country by country
Saudi Arabia — SCFHS and the Saudi Board. Residency and fellowship training under the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties includes a research project with a set timeline, and the pulmonology research proposal is the document prepared at the outset and cleared by the institutional review board before recruitment starts.
United Arab Emirates — DHA, DOH Abu Dhabi and MOHAP. Residents training in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates prepare a pulmonology research protocol for their programme and submit it for institutional review board approval before any data are collected.
Qatar — DHP (formerly QCHP) and Hamad Medical Corporation. A pulmonology IRB proposal is reviewed before recruitment, with the ethics section written to the institution's own template rather than a generic one.
Bahrain — NHRA. Trainees turning pulmonology research topics into a project need the proposal cleared by their institutional research and ethics committee before fieldwork begins.
Oman — OMSB. Residency programmes under the Oman Medical Specialty Board include a research component, and the pulmonology research proposal is the document assessed at the start of it.
Kuwait — KIMS. A pulmonology study protocol goes to the institutional committee for approval before the project begins.
Arab Board programmes across the region. The Arab Board carries its own research requirement irrespective of the host country, and the pulmonology proposal follows the same structure throughout.
Postgraduate degrees — Malaysia, the Gulf and beyond
Malaysia — MMed, the National Medical Research Register and MREC. A pulmonology dissertation proposal for a Master of Medicine programme carried out in a Ministry of Health facility must be registered on the NMRR and approved by the Medical Research and Ethics Committee before the study begins, and the guidance asks for submission four to six months ahead of data collection. Every investigator on the study team registers on the NMRR as well, so the methodology, ethics and team sections are written in far more detail than an Indian synopsis requires.
PhD and Master's candidates elsewhere. University programmes generally require a full pulmonology research proposal of roughly 6,000 to 10,000 words, with an extended literature review, a theoretical framework and a detailed methodology chapter.
PhD and MMed proposals are written individually by a medical doctor and revised until the supervisor accepts them. They are not produced by the automated protocol generator.
🔥 Trending research areas in Pulmonology for 2026–27
Persistent respiratory impairment after tuberculosis: examining symptoms, exercise limitation and lung function after treatment, while documenting assessment timing and evaluating suspected recurrent infection appropriately.
Asthma phenotyping in routine practice: assessing available biomarkers alongside exacerbation history and treatment exposure, with steroid use and sampling conditions recorded.
Inhaler technique and continuity of care: studying device-specific errors, adherence, affordability and follow-up in asthma or COPD using reproducible assessments rather than prescription records alone.
Bedside lung ultrasound and digital monitoring: evaluating available tools against a defined clinical question, with operator agreement, recording quality and independent reference assessment addressed.
Protocol and synopsis guidance
What a Pulmonology protocol must contain
Define the disease and clinical state. State the diagnostic framework for asthma, COPD, pneumonia, tuberculosis, pleural disease or another target condition. Distinguish an exacerbation from stable disease and document recent treatment, smoking, biomass exposure and relevant occupational exposure. Specify whether recruitment occurs before treatment, during admission or after recovery; these populations answer different questions.
Make spirometry interpretable. Record equipment quality checks, operator training, manoeuvre acceptability and repeatability, the reference equation and the rule used to define abnormality. Specify pre- or post-bronchodilator measurements and any clinically approved medication-withholding instructions. Retain test-quality information and explain how unusable tests will be handled instead of assigning them a disease category. Do not equate a low FVC alone with confirmed restriction.
Document respiratory support at measurement. For oxygen saturation and arterial blood gases, record collection time, oxygen device, flow or set inspired oxygen concentration, and relevant ventilatory settings. Inspired oxygen delivered through a conventional nasal cannula is variable; a ratio calculated from an estimated concentration should acknowledge that uncertainty. Never withdraw clinically required oxygen simply to obtain a research baseline.
Prespecify reference assessment and outcomes. A sleep questionnaire identifies risk rather than independently confirming sleep apnoea. Imaging suspicion and microbiological confirmation of infection are also different endpoints. If only selected participants undergo CT, bronchoscopy or sleep testing, explain how that selection limits accuracy estimates. Define exacerbation, treatment failure and readmission before recruitment, including whether recurrent events are counted separately.
Pulmonology synopsis versus Pulmonology protocol
The synopsis summarises the rationale, objectives, design, population, sample-size basis and essential methods for institutional submission. The protocol gives the operational detail needed to conduct the study consistently, although institutional terminology may overlap.
For pulmonology, both documents must specify whether the main assessment represents stable disease or an acute episode, and whether lung-function measurements are pre- or post-bronchodilator. The full protocol adds quality-control procedures, oxygen-support documentation, criteria for repeat testing after recovery and the handling of participants unable to perform acceptable manoeuvres. A study of airflow limitation during acute illness should not silently become a prevalence study of stable chronic disease.
Sample size and statistical analysis
Plan around one primary outcome. A frequency estimate needs an expected proportion and absolute precision; a comparison requires a justified difference and variability; a diagnostic study requires sufficient reference-positive and reference-negative participants. Allow for invalid spirometry, unavailable reference tests and loss to follow-up. Excluding everyone unable to complete spirometry may disproportionately remove the sickest patients and should be reported.
Respect repeated observations. Multiple manoeuvres, serial blood gases and repeated admissions do not represent independent participants. Analyse serial assessments with paired or repeated-measures methods as appropriate. For exacerbations, specify whether the endpoint is any event, time to first event or recurrent-event frequency, and account for differences in observation time.
Address confounding and interpretation. Consider age, sex, smoking, biomass exposure, body size, comorbidity, treatment and baseline severity where relevant. Record respiratory support when analysing oxygenation. Correlation between two measurements does not establish their agreement or interchangeability. Report effect sizes and confidence intervals, and keep locally selected diagnostic thresholds distinct from thresholds validated in an independent population.
Frequently Asked Questions – Pulmonology Research Topics (2026–27)
1. How do I choose a feasible Pulmonology thesis topic for MD or DNB Medicine?
For 2026–2027 admissions, choose a common respiratory problem with enough eligible patients and investigations already available locally. Confirm access to quality spirometry, microbiology, imaging or follow-up according to the question. Select one primary outcome and check whether it can be measured consistently during the intended clinical state.
2. Which study designs are suitable for a Pulmonology thesis?
Cross-sectional studies suit contemporaneous associations, cohorts suit subsequent exacerbations or outcomes, and diagnostic-accuracy studies need a suitable reference assessment. Case-control and retrospective studies may also be feasible when their sampling and records support the question. Research-assigned changes to treatment or rehabilitation need the corresponding interventional design and approvals. Confirm institutional acceptance before registration.
3. What should I settle with my guide before finalising the title?
Agree on the diagnostic definition, recruitment setting, disease stability, primary outcome, measurement timing and follow-up. Confirm operator training, spirometry quality criteria, reference tests and test costs. Decide how recent antibiotics, steroids, bronchodilators, oxygen support and repeated admissions will be recorded. The title should reflect what the available investigations can establish.
4. Can I use spirometry performed during an acute respiratory admission?
Yes, if the clinical condition permits testing and the research question concerns that acute state. Record test quality, treatment and timing. For questions about stable lung function, define a clinically appropriate reassessment after recovery and report who completes it. Admission measurements and stable follow-up measurements should not be pooled as equivalent observations, and inability to perform the test should be recorded explicitly.
5. How does a Pulmonology synopsis differ from a Pulmonology protocol?
The synopsis usually supports institutional review and registration, while the protocol details study conduct. Follow local terminology and format. Both must agree on disease definitions, clinical state, sampling, primary outcomes, sample-size assumptions and analysis. The protocol additionally explains test-quality control, oxygen-support documentation, repeat testing and outcome adjudication.
6. What ethical safeguards are needed for a Pulmonology thesis?
Obtain ethics review and applicable consent or an approved waiver for retrospective records or PACS review. If children are included, obtain guardian permission and age-appropriate assent from about seven years, as applicable. A routine-care design should specify no additional radiation, contrast or research-only venepuncture and 0 mL extra research blood. Justify additional numerical blood-volume and frequency limits, arterial sampling, scans, sequences or contrast exposure and obtain approval. Research bronchoscopy or pleural procedures require separate justification and consent.
Obtain separate consent for identifiable photographs or video, remove identifiers from DICOM headers and any reconstructed facial surfaces, and protect infection records. Apply appropriate infection-control precautions during sputum collection and lung-function testing. Escalate serious hypoxaemia, suspected pneumothorax, significant incidental lesions or possible infectious tuberculosis to the treating team and relevant respiratory or tuberculosis service. Necessary oxygen and urgent treatment must continue.
7. Does a low FVC on spirometry confirm restrictive lung disease?
No. A low FVC may reflect restriction, air trapping, incomplete inspiration or an inadequate expiratory manoeuvre. Review test quality and the FEV1/FVC ratio. Physiological restriction is confirmed by a reduced total lung capacity using an appropriate reference limit. Without lung-volume measurement, describe a pattern suggestive of restriction where appropriate and acknowledge the uncertainty; imaging and clinical evaluation are needed to determine its cause.
8. Can these topics support a PhD proposal or a Gulf board research project?
Yes, with adaptation. A PhD proposal needs a substantive original contribution beyond the usual MD synopsis. For SCFHS and Saudi Board programmes, the Arab Board of Health Specializations, and DHP-, DHA-, DOH- or MOHAP-linked training programmes, verify the specific curriculum, supervision and local ethics requirements. Where a board research project is mandatory, align its scope and assessment milestones with that programme. Do not assume uniform research obligations or dissertation formats across these bodies and linked programmes.
9. When should I register my Pulmonology thesis topic?
Follow the university or training board deadline after guide agreement and a feasibility review. Obtain the required scientific, departmental and ethics approvals before recruitment, research testing or research access to identifiable records. Allow time for seasonal recruitment where relevant, reassessment after recovery, confirmatory investigations and analysis. The last recruited participant needs the full planned follow-up period before submission.
