These chest and tuberculosis thesis topics are intended for MD Medicine and DNB Medicine candidates studying pulmonary tuberculosis, drug-resistant tuberculosis, extrapulmonary tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, pneumonia, pleural disease, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, respiratory failure and other common respiratory disorders. The emphasis is on designs that can be completed within one thesis period using patients, structured respiratory assessment, routine laboratory investigations, sputum testing, spirometry, pulse oximetry, arterial blood gas analysis, chest radiography, ultrasonography and clinically indicated computed tomography. Strong projects distinguish microbiologically confirmed disease from clinically presumed disease, standardise spirometry and imaging definitions, and record treatment received before physiological or microbiological measurements. The same framework can be adapted for chest research topics, an MD Medicine chest and TB protocol or a DNB Medicine chest and TB synopsis before final discussion with the postgraduate guide.

Not the general medicine subspeciality you need? Chest and tb is one section of our full general medicine collection — the hub page lists every subspeciality, each with its own free topic list. Updated September 2026.
📌 Updated for 2026–2027 MD Medicine/DNB Medicine Chest and TB admissions
The page has been reviewed for feasibility in postgraduate medicine departments where most respiratory research can be completed with structured clinical assessment, routine microbiology, spirometry and clinically indicated imaging.
Most projects can be completed with sputum microscopy or nucleic-acid testing, complete blood counts, inflammatory markers, pulse oximetry, spirometry, arterial blood gas analysis, chest radiography, ultrasonography and clinically indicated computed tomography.
Research-only bronchoscopy, molecular biomarker panels, advanced pulmonary physiology, serial high-resolution imaging or expensive microbiome testing are not required for most practical dissertation designs.
Publication potential is strongest when microbiological status, disease stage, treatment exposure, spirometry quality and imaging criteria are fixed before recruitment.

Already have your thesis title?
Generate the full chest and tb protocol directly — objectives, methodology, sample size, statistics, timeline, references and annexures.
Alongside chest and tb protocols and synopses, support is also available for departmental presentations, journal club presentations, ethics committee presentations, and posters and oral presentations for medical conferences — for postgraduate residents, board trainees and research scholars across India and the GCC. Prepared by a practising doctor with long experience in medical publishing and thesis supervision.
The topics above work as research questions anywhere — what changes is the document the institution expects, and who approves it before data collection begins. The Gulf equivalent of an Indian synopsis is the chest and tb research proposal submitted to an institutional review board, and it ordinarily carries three sections an Indian synopsis does not: a Gantt chart, a budget and resources section, and a Declaration of Helsinki statement.

Residency and fellowship training under the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties includes a research project with a set timeline, and the chest and tb research proposal is the document prepared at the outset and cleared by the institutional review board before recruitment starts.
United Arab Emirates — DHA, DOH Abu Dhabi and MOHAP. Residents training in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates prepare a chest and tb research protocol for their programme and submit it for institutional review board approval before any data are collected.
Qatar — DHP (formerly QCHP) and Hamad Medical Corporation. A chest and tb IRB proposal is reviewed before recruitment, with the ethics section written to the institution's own template rather than a generic one.
Bahrain — NHRA. Trainees turning chest and tb research topics into a project need the proposal cleared by their institutional research and ethics committee before fieldwork begins.
Oman — OMSB. Residency programmes under the Oman Medical Specialty Board include a research component, and the chest and tb research proposal is the document assessed at the start of it.
Kuwait — KIMS. A chest and tb study protocol goes to the institutional committee for approval before the project begins.
Arab Board programmes across the region. The Arab Board carries its own research requirement irrespective of the host country, and the chest and tb proposal follows the same structure throughout.
Postgraduate degrees — Malaysia, the Gulf and beyond
Malaysia — MMed, the National Medical Research Register and MREC. A chest and tb dissertation proposal for a Master of Medicine programme carried out in a Ministry of Health facility must be registered on the NMRR and approved by the Medical Research and Ethics Committee before the study begins, and the guidance asks for submission four to six months ahead of data collection. Every investigator on the study team registers on the NMRR as well, so the methodology, ethics and team sections are written in far more detail than an Indian synopsis requires.
PhD and Master's candidates elsewhere. University programmes generally require a full chest and tb research proposal of roughly 6,000 to 10,000 words, with an extended literature review, a theoretical framework and a detailed methodology chapter.
PhD and MMed proposals are written individually by a medical doctor and revised until the supervisor accepts them. They are not produced by the automated protocol generator.
🔥 Trending research areas in Chest and TB for 2026–27
Current dissertation opportunities increasingly focus on treatment-relevant phenotyping, non-invasive risk stratification and reproducible physiological or imaging measures rather than descriptive respiratory profiles alone.
Tuberculosis phenotype and resistance: sputum bacillary load, nucleic-acid testing, cavitation, nutrition and drug-resistance patterns remain useful when microbiological confirmation and prior treatment history are clearly separated.
Post-tuberculosis lung disease: airflow limitation, bronchiectasis, exercise capacity and chronic symptoms offer practical questions when active tuberculosis has been excluded and previous disease is documented reliably.
Respiratory physiology: spirometry, pulse oximetry, six-minute walk testing and arterial blood gas analysis support feasible studies when equipment calibration, patient effort and measurement conditions are standardised.
Imaging-functional correlation: high-resolution computed tomography extent in bronchiectasis or interstitial lung disease can be compared with symptoms or pulmonary function when image scoring is prespecified and readers are blinded to clinical outcomes where possible.
Protocol and synopsis guidance
What a Chest and TB protocol must contain
Diagnostic definition: State whether tuberculosis is microbiologically confirmed, clinically diagnosed or previously treated, and define how chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease or pleural disease will be established. Do not mix confirmed and presumptive disease without declaring separate categories.
Treatment status: Record whether measurements are obtained before or after antitubercular therapy, bronchodilators, corticosteroids, antibiotics, oxygen or diuretics. These treatments can alter sputum yield, spirometry, oxygen saturation, inflammatory markers and radiological appearance.
Spirometry quality: Define equipment calibration, acceptability and repeatability criteria, pre- or post-bronchodilator status and how technically inadequate tests will be handled. Poor-quality spirometry should not be analysed as if it were valid physiology.
Imaging definition: Radiographic extent, cavitation, pleural-effusion size, bronchiectasis morphology and interstitial lung disease severity require prespecified criteria. If more than one reader is used, the protocol should distinguish inter-reader agreement from diagnostic accuracy.
Verification pathway: Diagnostic studies should state what reference standard is used and how test-negative patients are classified. If only patients with positive imaging or screening tests receive microbiological confirmation or biopsy, verification bias may result.
Chest and TB synopsis versus Chest and TB protocol
Synopsis: The synopsis should state the respiratory condition, study design, principal clinical or laboratory variable, primary outcome, approximate sample size and broad statistical plan in a concise form suitable for academic review.
Protocol: The full protocol must define diagnostic criteria, microbiological status, previous treatment, timing of sputum collection, spirometry method, imaging criteria, treatment received before measurements and handling of technically inadequate or missing investigations.
Why the distinction matters: A synopsis may propose correlating sputum bacillary load with radiological severity in pulmonary tuberculosis, but the protocol must state which microbiological method is used, when sputum is collected relative to treatment, how radiological extent is scored and whether the image reader knows the microbiology result.
Sample size and statistical analysis
Match sample size to the primary objective: Estimating prevalence of rifampicin resistance, comparing COPD phenotypes, correlating spirometry with radiological extent and evaluating a pleural-fluid marker require different calculations.
Separate agreement from accuracy: Comparing pulse oximetry with arterial oxygen saturation, two radiology readers or two spirometry classifications requires agreement analysis. Sensitivity and specificity require a valid reference standard and answer a different question.
Control major confounders: Smoking, biomass exposure, prior tuberculosis, age, treatment duration, diabetes, anaemia, nutritional status and current respiratory medication can alter symptoms, spirometry, imaging and inflammatory markers.
Avoid selective verification: Diagnostic-accuracy estimates are biased if only high-risk or screen-positive patients receive the definitive test. The protocol should explain verification of both positive and negative groups or use a clearly defined follow-up pathway.
Frequently Asked Questions – CHEST AND TB RESEARCH TOPICS (2026–27)
1. How do I choose a feasible Chest and TB topic for the 2026–2027 academic year?
Start with conditions your medicine or respiratory service sees regularly, such as pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, pneumonia, pleural effusion, bronchiectasis or interstitial lung disease. Prefer one primary question that uses investigations already performed in routine care and confirm that sputum testing, spirometry or imaging required for the main outcome is consistently available.
2. Which study designs are usually accepted for a Chest and TB dissertation?
Feasible designs include cross-sectional observational and analytical studies, comparative studies between defined respiratory phenotypes, retrospective record-based cohorts, short prospective cohorts, diagnostic-accuracy studies and studies correlating imaging with physiological or microbiological findings. The design should follow the research question rather than defaulting to a cross-sectional label.
3. What should I settle with my guide before finalising a Chest and TB topic?
Agree on the exact diagnostic definition, microbiological confirmation status, treatment stage, principal spirometric or imaging measure, primary outcome, expected case load and which investigations are routinely available. For tuberculosis studies, decide how smear-negative, nucleic-acid-test-positive, clinically diagnosed and previously treated patients will be classified.
4. Can I use routine spirometry, sputum tests and chest imaging for my Chest and TB thesis?
Yes, provided each measurement is standardised. Spirometry should meet acceptability and repeatability criteria, sputum testing should specify the microbiological method and timing relative to treatment, and imaging studies should define the scoring or classification system before analysis. Routine availability does not remove the need for a reproducible measurement protocol.
5. What is the difference between a Chest and TB synopsis and a Chest and TB protocol?
The synopsis presents the research question, respiratory population, study design, principal variables and broad analysis plan. The protocol converts that idea into a reproducible method by defining disease criteria, microbiological status, treatment timing, spirometry standards, imaging interpretation, reference tests, sample-size assumptions and statistical analysis.
6. What ethical issues should I address in a Chest and TB study?
Prospective studies should obtain informed consent, while approved retrospective record-based work may qualify for a waiver of consent. If children are included, guardian consent and child assent from about seven years should be addressed. No additional radiation, contrast-enhanced computed tomography, bronchoscopy, pleural procedure or research-only venepuncture should be added merely for the dissertation unless scientifically justified and approved. If extra blood is required, the protocol should state the blood-volume limit.
Separate consent is required for identifiable photographs or video. Incidental clinically important findings such as suspected malignancy, severe hypoxaemia, previously unrecognised drug resistance, significant pulmonary hypertension or an unexpected focal lung lesion should have a named escalation pathway to the treating team. Imaging datasets should be anonymised before research use.
7. How do I avoid misclassification and verification bias in Chest and TB research?
Separate microbiologically confirmed tuberculosis from clinically diagnosed tuberculosis and state how smear-negative or nucleic-acid-test-negative patients are classified. In pleural and imaging studies, do not calculate diagnostic accuracy if only patients with positive screening tests undergo the definitive microbiological, cytological or histological reference test. Disease status should be established comparably across groups or a structured follow-up pathway should be used when invasive verification is not appropriate.
8. Can a Chest and TB dissertation later support a PhD or Gulf board research pathway?
Yes, but the documents serve different purposes. An MD or DNB synopsis is usually a bounded residency dissertation plan, while a PhD proposal generally requires a broader research gap, more extensive methodology and a programme of work beyond one residency project. Gulf pathways may also require a separate board research project under SCFHS and the Saudi Board, the Arab Board of Health Specializations, or DHP, DHA, DOH and MOHAP-linked training programmes. The same respiratory question can sometimes be adapted, but supervision, ethics, format and institutional requirements should be checked for the specific programme.
9. When should I register my Chest and TB dissertation?
Register after the diagnostic definition, microbiological or physiological measurement method, primary outcome, sample-size basis and expected recruitment rate have been agreed with the guide. Confirm that sputum testing, spirometry, radiology or other required investigations are available consistently throughout the planned data-collection period.
