The topic mix was reviewed for feasibility across routine cataract clinics, preoperative work-up, operating lists and standard postoperative follow-up.
Many projects can be completed with slit-lamp examination, visual acuity, refraction, keratometry, tonometry and routine optical or ultrasound biometry; selected questions additionally use specular microscopy, pachymetry, OCT or B-scan ultrasonography where these are already available.
Most topics do not require experimental surgery, new devices or research-only investigations; the strongest designs usually define one primary outcome and use a fixed postoperative assessment point.
Publication potential is strongest where the protocol addresses refractive prediction error, surgically induced astigmatism, corneal endothelial safety, diabetes, pseudoexfoliation, small pupil, complicated cataract or patient-reported outcomes with clearly prespecified measurements.

Alongside cataract protocols and synopses, support is also available for departmental presentations, journal club presentations, ethics committee presentations, and posters and oral presentations for medical conferences — for postgraduate residents, board trainees and research scholars across India and the GCC. Prepared by a practising doctor with long experience in medical publishing and thesis supervision.
The topics above work as research questions anywhere — what changes is the document the institution expects, and who approves it before data collection begins. The Gulf equivalent of an Indian synopsis is the cataract research proposal submitted to an institutional review board, and it ordinarily carries three sections an Indian synopsis does not: a Gantt chart, a budget and resources section, and a Declaration of Helsinki statement.
Board and residency programmes — country by country
Saudi Arabia — SCFHS and the Saudi Board. Residency and fellowship training under the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties includes a research project with a set timeline, and the cataract research proposal is the document prepared at the outset and cleared by the institutional review board before recruitment starts.
United Arab Emirates — DHA, DOH Abu Dhabi and MOHAP. Residents training in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates prepare a cataract research protocol for their programme and submit it for institutional review board approval before any data are collected.
Qatar — DHP (formerly QCHP) and Hamad Medical Corporation. A cataract IRB proposal is reviewed before recruitment, with the ethics section written to the institution's own template rather than a generic one.
Bahrain — NHRA. Trainees turning cataract research topics into a project need the proposal cleared by their institutional research and ethics committee before fieldwork begins.
Oman — OMSB. Residency programmes under the Oman Medical Specialty Board include a research component, and the cataract research proposal is the document assessed at the start of it.
Kuwait — KIMS. A cataract study protocol goes to the institutional committee for approval before the project begins.
Arab Board programmes across the region. The Arab Board carries its own research requirement irrespective of the host country, and the cataract proposal follows the same structure throughout.
Postgraduate degrees — Malaysia, the Gulf and beyond
Malaysia — MMed, the National Medical Research Register and MREC. A cataract dissertation proposal for a Master of Medicine programme carried out in a Ministry of Health facility must be registered on the NMRR and approved by the Medical Research and Ethics Committee before the study begins, and the guidance asks for submission four to six months ahead of data collection. Every investigator on the study team registers on the NMRR as well, so the methodology, ethics and team sections are written in far more detail than an Indian synopsis requires.
PhD and Master's candidates elsewhere. University programmes generally require a full cataract research proposal of roughly 6,000 to 10,000 words, with an extended literature review, a theoretical framework and a detailed methodology chapter.
PhD and MMed proposals are written individually by a medical doctor and revised until the supervisor accepts them. They are not produced by the automated protocol generator.
Current cataract research is increasingly moving from simple visual-acuity comparisons towards measurement quality, prediction error and patient-centred outcomes.
Biometry and refractive prediction: optical biometry, keratometry repeatability and absolute postoperative prediction error are useful because small preoperative measurement differences can produce clinically meaningful refractive surprises.
Ocular surface effects on cataract measurements: tear-film instability and dry eye are important because unstable keratometry can affect intraocular lens power calculation and postoperative refractive accuracy.
Endothelial safety and surgical stress: endothelial cell loss, corneal thickness and early oedema allow phaco energy, cataract density, anterior chamber depth and systemic disease to be studied using measurable postoperative outcomes.
Complex cataract and real-world outcomes: pseudoexfoliation, glaucoma, small pupil, diabetes, traumatic cataract, adherence and follow-up are valuable because they reflect routine teaching-hospital case mix rather than ideal uncomplicated surgery alone.
Protocol and synopsis guidance
What a Cataract protocol must contain
Define the eye-level question first. A cataract protocol should state whether the unit of analysis is the patient, one study eye per patient, or both eyes. If both eyes are included, the protocol must explain how correlation between fellow eyes will be handled rather than counting them as fully independent observations.
Fix the measurement method and time point. Visual acuity format, refraction method, keratometer or biometer, cataract grading system, specular microscopy method, pachymetry method and postoperative visit should be prespecified. Refractive studies should distinguish signed prediction error from absolute prediction error, while surgically induced astigmatism should be analysed as a vector rather than by simple subtraction of cylinder magnitudes.
Define the operative exposure. Phacoemulsification, manual small incision cataract surgery, incision location, surgeon grade, pupil-expansion device, phaco energy, operative duration and intraoperative complications should be recorded only when they are relevant to the primary objective. Mixing procedures without prespecified stratification can make the final analysis uninterpretable.
Cataract synopsis versus Cataract protocol
The synopsis is the compressed academic version. It usually states the background, rationale, objectives, design, setting, participants, major measurements and analysis in a concise form suitable for departmental or university submission.
The protocol is the operational document. For cataract work it should go further by defining which eye is analysed, the exact biometry and refraction methods, cataract grading, surgical technique, postoperative time points, handling of bilateral cases, criteria for excluding complicated surgery, and how missing follow-up will be managed.
Do not leave measurement decisions until data collection starts. A synopsis can say that refractive outcome will be assessed, but the protocol should specify whether the outcome is spherical equivalent, cylinder, signed prediction error, absolute prediction error or a prespecified visual-acuity endpoint.
Sample size and statistical analysis
Base the sample size on the primary outcome. Agreement studies need assumptions about expected limits of agreement or reliability, comparative studies need an expected between-group difference, incidence studies need an anticipated proportion, and diagnostic-accuracy studies need assumptions about sensitivity, specificity and disease prevalence.
Match the test to the data structure. Preoperative and postoperative measurements from the same eye are paired. Measurements from two unrelated surgical groups are independent. Repeated postoperative visits require repeated-measures methods when all time points are analysed together.
Account for two-eye data. Both eyes from the same patient are correlated. Either select one eye using a prespecified rule or use an analysis that accounts for within-patient clustering. Simply doubling the number of eyes while applying tests that assume independence can produce confidence intervals and p-values that are too optimistic.
1. How do I choose a feasible Cataract thesis topic for 2026-2027?
Choose a question that matches the cataract volume, equipment and follow-up pattern of the department. A single clearly measurable primary outcome is usually better than a broad title containing many unrelated endpoints. Topics based on routine biometry, refraction, slit-lamp findings, operative records and scheduled postoperative visits are generally easier to complete than studies requiring uncommon devices or long follow-up.
2. Which study designs are accepted for a Cataract thesis?
Commonly workable designs include prospective or retrospective observational studies, comparative cohort studies, cross-sectional analytical studies, agreement and reliability studies, diagnostic-accuracy studies, repeated-measures studies and service-delivery studies. The design should follow the objective rather than being chosen only because it is familiar.
3. What should I settle with my guide before registering a Cataract topic?
Settle the primary outcome, study eye rule, surgical group definitions, required instruments, postoperative time point, minimum follow-up, exclusion of complicated cases, expected sample availability and the exact variables that will be taken from routine records. For surgical comparisons, clarify whether surgeon experience and cataract density will be measured because both can confound the result.
4. How should postoperative refractive outcome be measured in a Cataract study?
Use a prespecified postoperative refraction time after the early postoperative state has stabilised. State whether the main outcome is spherical equivalent, refractive cylinder, uncorrected or best corrected visual acuity, signed prediction error or absolute prediction error. Do not treat signed and absolute errors as interchangeable, because a positive and a negative error can cancel when averaged even though both represent inaccurate prediction.
5. What is the difference between a Cataract synopsis and a Cataract protocol?
The synopsis is the concise submission document describing why the study is being done and how it will broadly be conducted. The protocol should contain the operational details needed to reproduce the work, including eye selection, measurement methods, grading systems, surgical exposure, follow-up schedule, primary endpoint, statistical plan and management of bilateral-eye data.
6. What ethical issues should I address in a Cataract thesis?
Prospective work should use informed consent, while paediatric cataract studies require guardian consent and child assent from about seven years when developmentally appropriate. Record-based studies may seek an ethics-approved waiver of consent where permitted. The study should state that no additional radiation, contrast, invasive procedure or research-only venepuncture will be added unless scientifically necessary; if blood sampling is specifically required, the protocol should state the volume limit and justification. Separate consent should be obtained for identifiable anterior-segment photographs or video. Clinically important incidental findings such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, corneal endothelial compromise or posterior-segment pathology detected during B-scan assessment should have a named route for documentation, counselling and referral.
7. Can I include both eyes of the same patient in a Cataract thesis?
Yes, but the two eyes are not statistically independent. The protocol should either select one study eye using a rule decided before analysis or use statistical methods that account for clustering within patients. Treating two eyes from one person as though they came from two unrelated participants can artificially increase the effective sample size and make p-values appear more significant than they are.
8. Can a Cataract topic be used for a PhD proposal or Gulf board research project?
Yes, but the scope changes. An MS Ophthalmology synopsis is usually designed around one achievable dissertation question, while a PhD proposal generally needs a broader research programme, stronger novelty and a more developed methodological framework. Cataract questions can also be adapted to the mandatory research project requirements used by SCFHS and the Saudi Board, the Arab Board of Health Specializations, and DHP, DHA, DOH and MOHAP-linked training programmes, provided the local board format, ethics process and supervisory requirements are followed.
9. When should I register my Cataract thesis topic?
Register after confirming that the department sees enough eligible cataract patients, the required measurements are routinely available, the guide agrees with the primary objective and the planned postoperative visit is realistic. Registration should occur early enough to allow ethics approval, pilot testing of the data sheet and prospective enrolment without compressing follow-up near the submission deadline.
